Here we have a truly exceptional Supro from Valco's Chicago factory: the 1959 Rhythm Master “Val Trol.”
Visually, it's clearly a product of its time, but that's where things get really interesting from a technical standpoint.
In addition to the two classic single-coil pickups, there's also an extra piezo-style pickup in the bridge. The 3-way switch allows you to select the neck pickup, bridge pickup, and piezo separately—and there are volume and tone adjustment screws for each pickup. For a guitar from 1959, it's surprisingly versatile and definitely has a sound all its own.
The maple body is paired with a maple neck featuring a Rio rosewood fingerboard, block inlays, and a pleasantly substantial Soft-V profile.
The original gold Kluson Tulip single-line tuners operate smoothly and hold their tuning reliably.
And, of course, this is especially interesting for vintage fans: The Rio rosewood fretboard comes with a CITES certificate.
Weighing 3,568 grams, the Val Trol is substantial but still comfortable to play. A truly rare and exceptionally distinctive piece of American guitar history.
